About us

The Urban planning Institute of the Republic of Slovenia (UIRS) is the central Slovenian research organisation in the field of spatial planning and related disciplines. Founded in 1955, UIRS was transformed into a public research institute in 1993, a status which continues to apply to date. Its basic activities are research, education and publishing. It also operates a public library with an extensive literature stock and large collection of other references in the field of spatial planning.

The UIRS performs basic and applicative research projects at the international, national, regional and local levels, addressing various issues and processes of the urban and spatial development of Slovenia and the wider area. Research activity also includes the advancement of methodological and practical solutions for the development of urban areas, and planning of settlements and the countryside. Spatial research is primarily focused on: policy analysis and impact assessment, history of architecture and urban planning, demographic studies, equal opportunities, informatics, cultural heritage, climate change, urban regeneration, transport and urban mobility, spatial planning and design, vulnerable groups, regional development and spatial planning, housing studies, urban simulations and planning legislation.

The UIRS researchers comprise an interdisciplinary group of about 25 experts in various areas and disciplines, including architecture, urban landscape planning, surveying, geography, sociology, urban economics, history of architecture and urban planning and other areas.

10. June 2017: Celebrating World Art Nouveau Day!
For five years in Slovenia we celebrate the World Art Nouveau Day on the 10th of June. The 10th of June is the day on which two charismatic architects of the movement Antonio Gaudi and Ödön Lechner died. Organisations from all over the world participate with exhibitions, photo competitions, lectures, walks, workshops etc...

LUMAT on the 28. Sedlar Meeting of the Town and Spatial Planning Association of Slovenia
This year, the Museum of Architecture and Design in Ljubljana hosted the 28th meeting called Sedlar Meeting yearly organized by the Town and Spatial Planning Association of Slovenia. The meeting attended arround 100 experts from the field of spatial and urban planning. This year's event was dedicated to the current topic of urban regeneration with which they want to open a dialog and to highlight proposals for the effective renewal and urban regeneration in Slovenia. Within the professional lectures, Boštjan Cotič from the Urban Planning Institute of the Republic of Slovenia presented the project LUMAT, dealing with the integrated management of functional urban areas in terms of sustainable land use in Slovenia.

Lead partner visited Slovenian partners of the LUMAT project
Within the framework of the European project LUMAT, funded by the Central Europe Program, was in Slovenia between 16th and 18th of May 2017 organized a meeting between the lead partner and Slovenian partners of the LUMAT project, the Urban Planning Institute of the Republic of Slovenia, the Ministry of the Environment and Spatial Planning and the City of Kranj. The LUMAT project addresses the topic of integrated environmental management of degraded urban areas and industrial zones. The main aim of the meeting was to present expected results of the project and the pilot actions of the pilot partner the City of Kranj.
