Parking is among the more pressing challenges of modern cities and, increasingly, of smaller settlements as well. Private cars are used on average for only about one hour per day, yet vast amounts of valuable urban space are allocated to them. It is therefore not difficult to understand why parking deserves special attention. Constructing large parking facilities at trip destinations is expensive and environmentally problematic, making it more sensible to address parking through more efficient approaches, namely parking management. In spatial planning and development, few areas can generate as many positive effects on quality of life, behavioural change, and travel habits as parking management.
This study was carried out as a basis for amendments to spatial planning legislation. It will support the establishment of urban planning criteria for planning parking areas in municipal spatial plans and provide guidance on integrating this topic into Sustainable Urban Mobility Plans (SUMPs).
