Increasing the role of renewable resources in electricity generation also aims to promote the installation of photovoltaic devices (PD) on buildings. One of the most pressing issues is the visually prominent installation of these systems, which can significantly impact the appearance and spatial characteristics of buildings or groups of buildings. Installing PD on buildings in highly exposed areas, such as entrances to settlements or exposed locations, can negatively affect the overall image of the town or area. Cultural heritage buildings pose a particular challenge, as they hold testimonial value and are important for the quality and identity of the area. Therefore, every decision regarding the installation of new technologies or devices should be carefully considered.
 
Project is financed by Slovenian Research and Innovation Agency (ARIS), Ministry of Culture and Ministry of the Environment, Climate and Energy. 

 

 
The project is based on the Guidelines for the Renovation of Heritage Buildings (MzI & MK, 2016), which identified opportunities for the utilization of renewable resources, including the installation of photovoltaic devices. 
 
A comprehensive analysis and evaluation will be conducted within the project framework to complement and specify the existing guidelines. This will include studying successful examples from Slovenia and comparable European countries. Based on these examples and a review of the current state of the art and available technological options, the project will develop practical guidelines that consider factors such as architectural style, materiality, the historical significance of the buildings, and specific requirements of photovoltaic technologies. A key aspect that requires consideration is the visual impact on the landscape. While integrating photovoltaic devices is important for sustainable development, it should not compromise the aesthetic integrity and historical value of heritage buildings and their surrounding areas. This principle also applies to other spaces that possess aesthetic qualities, even if they lack specific cultural heritage attributes.
